Your initial research topic

Class,

Using your notes and questions from today as a foundation, answer and elaborate on the following questions. Write your answers in complete sentence, using one-two paragraphs. Be thorough and detailed.

Even if you think you may wind up switching topics, complete these steps. You can use the methods we will practice (starting today) to come up with a research topic in any class for the rest of your college days.

This first step is an exciting place to be because it will lead you into the unknown. Stick with it, and, ideally, you'll come out on the other side of these next several weeks with deep knowledge on something you care about.

Questions and responses:

What two topics did you circle in your list?
For which of those two topics did you come up with questions?
What drew you to the topic? How did you first hear about it? Do you have a personal connection to it?  Describe in detail.
What about it makes you want to know more?
How much do you know about the topic?
Of the questions you wrote down in class, which one or two seem the most promising?
What potential obstacles do you foresee in researching and writing about this topic?

  1. From yesterdays class, I selected topics of social media from technologies and Business from jobs. Out of those two topics, I chose social media to come up with many questions; fourteen to be exact. Though I am not permanently picking this as my topic, but I chose social media because it is a modern trend in the 21st century and is a new source of communication. Ever since I got a Facebook account, I was now a part of social media. I am not very connected to it, because a lot of people use it differently and for immature reasons. to this day I only have Facebook and never have gotten twitter, instagram, tinder, or snapchat. Back to immature reasons, social media is quicker source to connect to your "friends" and even your "enemies", therefore, it is dangerous, especially to teenagers who have social media accounts. Cyber-bullying began from social media, and as a result there have been teen suicides. I only use it to keep in touch with friends, but I would never connect to it personally if social media is being used to hurt people.
What I know so far is that social media is growing, the trend is truly part of the modern era. However, I would like to know when will it begin to slowdown. How does it impact society, if it does at all? Also for the concern of teenagers, should there be a limited age for using social media? I wonder if social will be the only way for people to meet nowadays and possibly form friendships, relationships, and marriages through social media. Also I would like to know social media is a good time killer or does it consume time very well. What I know so far is that social media is growing, it is used for bullying other people, and that it is dangerous because there are many profiles with anonymity. The best question i wrote down was. "Does it change people's lives and ideas." It is effective because so many people use it to connect and I feel that is the only source people will use throughout their lives. Though I have gained a lot of knowledge about social media and there is more to reearch, but I might not continue searching information about social media, because I know a lot and it feels very basic to know about. The internet would be a great source to find writings about social media and for quoting, but most importantly, talk about social media with other people who use social media and learn about how they feel about it, truthfully.

  2. The two topics I circled on my list were Artificial Intelligence and video games. I decided to come up with questions about video games because I’ve grown up around video games. Since I was about four years old I had a video game controller in my hands and that hasn’t changed even today. Since I have this connection with video games I’m naturally drawn to information about them and I want to know more about them. I don’t know much about video games, but what I do know tends to be the negative aspects of the industry or they tend to be featured in the mass media when some criminal happens to play video games. In other words, video games are (for the most part) looked down upon by people who don’t understand them.
Of all of the questions I wrote down in class I think the one that is the most promising has to do with the associations of video games to mental and physical health. There has always been media outcries that criticize video games as a medium that poisons the minds of the young with violence while people who actually play video games will disagree with this notion (myself included). There are also times when the media may report that video games helps children develop finer motor controls. This question seems to be the most promising, and may also have many studies about it. However, I do recognize that writing about this topic may make my paper a bit biased because of all the time I’ve spent gaming. Whether I become overly critical or the opposite, a bias is still a bias and I recognize that. I also recognize that there may be too many scientific studies that I won’t be able to get access to (or understand) because of the fact that they are intended for the eyes of people who are academically well-off. Regardless of that, I would still like to research this topic since it’s a topic that is, and always will be, an important one to me.

  3. The two topics I circled from my list that we created yesterday were Italy and Roman Mythology because I have always been fascinated with Mythology and My ancestors are from Italy. From these two topics I chose Italy. I came up with several questions including "what is/was Italy's involvement with the mafia?" and "who founded Italy?" What really made me choose this topic is my ancestry. Ever since I could remember, my family has talked about our ancestors coming to Ellis Island from Italy. Both my grandfather and my father speak italian. Even though I do not speak italian fluently, my dad used to call me in for dinner in italian when I was younger. I have always wanted to know more about where my family comes because family is one of the most important things to me, I would like to learn the history of the country. I am not as familiar as I would like to be with the topic, I know where it is located, I know they're good at soccer, I know about how they were outcasted like many other immigrants when they came to the United States of America but not much more other than that.
Of all the questions I wrote down in class, I think the most promising one has to be when and who founded the country. This is a pretty straightforward question, so I think the biggest obstacle I will face with this topic is writing a long paper about it because of how simple the answer could be.

  4. I circled Magic: the Gathering and gaming yesterday in class, and chose Magic to ask the questions about. While for many people it’s just a hobby, professionally playing the card game is a wanted career path. I started playing when I was eight, but dropped it because I had nobody to play the game with. Fast forward to the summer before sophomore year, Magic 2013 became free on Xbox Live and me and my friends played every day after school, leading us to play the paper card game during our lunch break in school. By the end of my senior year, almost everybody in the class had played the game with us. I started going to small tournaments every Friday night, and I still play nearly every Thursday night.
The entire game is so complex, having over 1000 rules, not to mention the various sub-rulings for specific cards. That in itself is interesting, but there is so much more that a person can know about: during certain time periods in its history, certain decks were so dominant that you weren’t playing right if you weren’t playing that deck. At some point, it was those decks that almost killed the game in its professional form.
I know as much about Magic as a serious sports fan knows about their chosen sport, give or take. The question that I think has the most promise is “Why did the Combo Winter happen?” In regards to researching, the major problem I think I’ll have is getting in contact with the lead designer of the set that made this period in time possible.

  5. From Tuesday's class, the topics I had circle in my list were in the category of controversy: one being on feminism and the other on organic food. Out of those two topics, I had chosen feminism to be the one worth questioning about. The thought about this topic had come from the discussion that happened in my Sociology class last Monday but, it wasn't the first time I heard about it. From what I can recaptured, it had made me contemplate as to why people (not everyone) viewed the idea of feminism as radical or so to say "threatening." It concerns me because I, too am a feminist and as a feminist, my beliefs are at times, misunderstood and sterotypicalize by others. This had all started when I became part of the feminist advocacy back in middle school. I didn't appreciate being labeled as "girl" who should be accustom to the norms of one nor did I favor the mistreatment that females were given. I wanted to follow my own standards where my interest and hobbies lie in. As a result, I stick to my integrity. It had led me into seeking and supporting gender equality and gender diversity in different areas (e.g, workplace, jobs, career, hobbies, etc.).
Even though I am a feminist, I still want to know more about the idea of feminism, its history, and more importantly, the one that concerns me the most misandry that people, especially anti-feminists disguised feminists as. In all sense, when it comes to researching and writing about feminism, I don’t think there will be any potential obstacles since it's a broad topic and it goes along with my belief.

  6. The two topics I circled last class were Boston and Mobsters/Gangs so I decided to combine the two. I came up with questions for the history of mobs in Boston, for example the Irish and Italian mob. I grew up just outside of Boston in Lynn, MA; and my grandfather owned a bar in Charlestown. I was told by my father that Whitey Bulger was my grandfathers second cousin and he use to go to the bar all the time. After seeing the movie “Black Mass” it made me want to learn more about Whitey Bulger and the Winter Hill Gang. I know a brief amount of background information about this topic but I would really like to learn more about the history of it and the behind the scene action. The most promising question I wrote down last class has to be when and why did these mobs/gangs start. I don’t believe there will be any obstacles when researching my topic because I know the internet has a lot of information and facts as well as my father.

  7. I picked driver-less cars and mountains for the class exercise .I came up with questions about the driver-less car.I first heard about this on the internet,I have been fascinated with the thought of sitting in this car not having to pay attention since.I do not have any experience doing this though in new York seeing the executives being driven around wile thay read the news paper has caught my interest.I want to know if in my life time there will be such a thing to look forward to.
I don't Know a lot about this topic other than it is real and the race is underway Google is one of the players, along with Mercedes. I think the safety of this product will be the first area to address. The problem with the research will be the secrecy of the development and limited knowledge in this area.
